12 Universities Qualify To Train Architects – ARCON

Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) said only 12 universities in the country are qualified to award first and second degrees in architecture of all the 138 universities in the country.

Speaking exclusively with LEADERSHIP WEEKEND, the president of ARCON, Arch. Umaru Aliyu, stated that the council would soon publish the names of the Universities that have been approved by the council to run the programme.

Aliyu frowned at the fact that many universities in the country have continued to run a programme on architecture without the necessary facilities, manpower or an approval from ARCON, adding that graduates of such Universities would not be registered by the council.

“There are many universities that churn out graduates from unapproved departments of architecture in the country. It is unfortunate that some Vice Chancellors of Universities start architectural programmes in their schools without clearance from the National Universities Commission (NUC) or an approval by ARCON.

‘’We have such Universities almost everywhere in the country today but we have only 12 Universities in the country that have the approval of the council to award first and second degrees in architecture,”he said.

The ARCON president added that the council will soon publish the names of the 12 Universities so that parents and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) would stop sending their wards and candidates to illegal Architectural departments in the nation’s Universities.

Investigation by LEADERSHIP WEEKEND revealed that about 24 Universities in the country currently run first and second degree programmes in architecture, a situation Arch. Aliyu described as alarming.

He reminded Universities in the country that the law establishing the council empowers it to draw up the required course content for graduates of architecture in the universities, adding that regulating the training and practice of architecture must start with the schools.
